Factors Affecting Paddle Length
Kayak Width
Wider kayaks require longer paddles to comfortably reach the water. For example, recreational kayaks (70-80cm wide) need longer paddles than narrow sea kayaks (50-60cm wide).
Paddler Height
Taller paddlers naturally need longer paddles. As a general rule, add 5cm to your paddle length for every 15cm above 175cm in height.
Paddling Style
High-angle paddlers (vertical shaft) typically use shorter paddles (200-220cm), while low-angle paddlers (more horizontal) need longer paddles (220-250cm).
Kayak Type
Sea kayaks usually require shorter paddles (210-230cm), while wider recreational or fishing kayaks need longer paddles (230-260cm). Whitewater paddles are shortest (180-200cm).
Shaft Design
Bent shaft paddles can be 5-10cm shorter than straight shafts. Feathered blades (angled) may require slight length adjustments compared to unfeathered.
Personal Preference
Ultimately, paddle length comes down to comfort. Try different lengths in similar conditions to what you'll be paddling. Your perfect paddle should feel like an extension of your body.
