    I get asked about this constantly by swimmers of mine who cross over into diving on holiday, and the honest answer is that flying after diving isn't one single rule, it's a range that depends on how many dives you did, how deep you went, and whether any of them required decompression stops. A diver who did one shallow no-decompression dive is in a very different position from someone who logged four dives over three days, even if both of them surfaced at the same time yesterday afternoon.

    The number one mistake I see isn't diving too deep, it's treating every surface interval as the same 24 hours regardless of the dive profile behind it.

    This calculator follows the widely cited recommendations that came out of the 2002 Flying After Diving Workshop, convened by the Divers Alert Network (DAN) alongside the diving medicine community, and now referenced across recreational training agencies. In plain terms: a single no-decompression dive typically calls for a minimum 12-hour surface interval before flying, multiple dives per day or multi-day diving typically calls for a minimum 18 hours, and any dive requiring decompression stops calls for a more conservative interval, often 24 hours or more depending on the profile. These are minimums, not targets, and a longer wait is always the safer choice, never the wrong one.

    Why altitude, not just time, is doing the real work here

    Nitrogen absorbed under pressure during a dive needs time to off-gas from your tissues before you reduce the ambient pressure around you again, and a pressurised aircraft cabin does exactly that, even though it feels like a sealed, comfortable box.
