How to Use This Calculator
Enter your details in the form and click "Calculate Weight" to get your personalized weight recommendation. The graph shows how your buoyancy changes with depth. For best results, always test your weighting in a controlled environment before spearfishing.
Factors Affecting Spearfishing Weight
Wetsuit Thickness
Thicker wetsuits provide more warmth but require additional weight to compensate for their buoyancy. A 5mm suit typically needs 1-2kg more weight than a 3mm suit.
Water Type
Saltwater is denser than freshwater, providing more buoyancy. Spearfishers typically need 10-15% more weight in saltwater compared to freshwater environments.
Body Composition
Muscle is denser than fat, so individuals with higher muscle mass often require less weight. Your natural buoyancy significantly impacts your weighting needs.
Target Depth
As you descend, wetsuit compression reduces buoyancy. Deeper dives require less weight to achieve neutral buoyancy at depth, but you'll be more buoyant at the surface.
