Wave Height Guide

  • Beginner: 1-3 ft (0.3-0.9m)
  • Intermediate: 3-6 ft (0.9-1.8m)
  • Advanced: 6-10 ft (1.8-3m)
  • Expert: 10+ ft (3m+)
In Hawaii, waves are measured from the back, so a "6ft Hawaiian" is actually 12ft face!

Wave Period Significance

  • 1-5 sec: Wind swell (poor quality)
  • 6-9 sec: Average conditions
  • 10-14 sec: Good groundswell
  • 15+ sec: Powerful groundswell
Longer periods create faster, more powerful waves that break more evenly along the shoreline.

Wind Direction Impact

  • Offshore: Best conditions (wind blowing from land to sea)
  • Cross-shore: Rideable but choppy
  • Onshore: Poor conditions (wind blowing from sea to land)
In Indonesia, offshore winds are common in the morning, making dawn patrol sessions ideal.
