Global Surfing Conditions Guide
Wave Height Explained
Wave height is measured from trough to crest. Ideal surfing waves range from 1-3 meters. Locations like Hawaii and Australia often have larger swells, while Mediterranean spots average 1-2 meters.
Wave Period Importance
Wave period indicates wave energy. Longer periods (12+ seconds) create powerful, well-formed waves. Short periods (under 8s) create choppy conditions. Pacific coasts typically have longer periods than Atlantic.
Wind & Tide Factors
Offshore winds (from land to sea) create clean wave faces. Tides dramatically affect reef and point breaks. In Indonesia, many breaks only work at mid-high tide, while UK beach breaks vary throughout tide cycles.
